Geothermal
Through a combination of government and private funding, NER is actively developing new testing capabilities and protocols to tackle pressing challenges for the geothermal industry.
Current research areas include:
- Super-Critical Super-Hot Geothermal
- Enhanced Geothermal Systems
- Closed Loop Geothermal Systems
- Thermal Energy Storage
- Thermo Electric Generators
Active projects involve testing of new proppants at extreme conditions, measuring thermal conductivity as a function of stress and temperature, and studies of rock mechanics and permeability for superhot reservoir engineering where the transition from high sub-critical to supercritical water is thought to trigger a potential brittle-ductile transition in some cases.
