Geologic Hydrogen
New England Research (NER) has been awarded ARPA-E funding to spearhead innovative work in the field of Geological Hydrogen
Our research focuses on accelerating the natural process of hydrogen generation through Accelerated Mechanical Propagation (AMP) of serpentinization. By inducing an extensive micro-fracture network within geological formations, we aim to significantly enhance the sub-surface reaction, leading to controlled and economic release of hydrogen from ultramafic rock minerals. NER is actively testing and modeling this strongly coupled THMC process to support and help de-risk field development trials.
As part of this project, NER has created a step change in our AutoLab systems and developed new capabilities to test samples under in-situ HTHP conditions with coupled THMC loading. These testing systems are designed to test samples under extreme temperatures (up to 450 C) and can handle reactive fluids.
In parallel, NER is developing modeling workflows and capabilities that integrate CT and thin-section images with test data and advanced models to identify & quantify favorable conditions for AMP to occur.
