Multiscale Reservoir Characterization

Efficiently capture multiple scales of heterogeneity in an integrated core analysis program.

Rapid High Resolution Petrophysical Scanning

We examine small-to-medium scale heterogeneity on whole core, preferably slabbed, using AutoScan technology. The AutoScan can measure P and S ultrasonic velocities, FTIR, mechanical hardness, steady state permeability, and in some cases complex resistivity. We can implement two types of scans: two dimensional maps and linear core traverses. The resulting high resolution petrophysical scans are used for integrating fine scale heterogeneities with core description and well-log measurements.

Multiproperty Rocktyping and Cost Effective Sampling

The scans are analyzed, using statistical cluster analysis algorithms and incorporated in our DataMiner software to locate sections of rock with similar petrophysical properties. Petrophysical data collected by AutoScan is analyzed in the context of parasequences, facies and lithologic units delineated in the core description investigation to define “rock types” in the cored section. This is a preliminary step to determine the lithologic controls on petrophysical properties and the heterogeneity in the vertical section. This work provides the basis for selection of a set of truly representative core samples for measurement of petrophysical properties and petrologic properties.

Core Measurements at In-situ Conditions

NER’s in-house developed AutoLab rock testing systems facilitate petrophysical and geomechanical measurements. ultrasonic velocities, permeability, complex electrical impedance, compressibility, strength and elastic constants at selected stresses and temperatures.

Core analysis programs are designed around the questions being addressed. Measurement suites are customized based on the nature of the core, the supporting field data available, and the goals of the core analysis. Measurements include:

  • Permeability
  • Ultrasonic Velocities
  • Formation factor
  • Complex electrical impedance; Frequency and chemistry dependence
  • Compressibility (pore volume, bulk and grain)
  • Strength and elastic constants

Data Integration

Relationships between petrophysical properties, such as velocities, porosity, mineralogy, rock type, strength, and moduli, are established using cluster analysis tools and model fitting customized to your reservoir and rock types. As part of many core analysis projects, NER makes reservoir-specific recommendations concerning future data collection and analysis, helping clients improve resolution of reservoir properties and or to optimize results for a particular reservoir and application
